This book follows a straightforward arc, starting with a history of older crises and the economics who analyzed them. It then adresses the very deep roots of the most recent crisis, as well as the ways this catastrophe unfolded in a very predictable pattern, conforming to time honored precedents. Finally, the book looks to the future, laying out much needed reforms of the financial system and adressing the likelihood of other crises in the coming years. Chapter 1 takes the reader on a tour of the past, surveying the many booms, bubbles, and busts that have swept the economic landscape. It focus in particular on the relationship betweem capitalism and crisis, beginning with the speculative bubble in tulips in 1630s Holland, then ranging forward to the South Sea Bubble of 1720; the first global financial crisis in 1825; the panic of 1907; the great depression of the 1930s; and the many crises that plagued emerging markets and advanced economies from the 1980s onward. Crises, we argue, are neither the freak events that modern economics has made them seem not the rare ""black swans"" that other commentators have made them out to be.
